I Believe… in Agricultural Education

Wednesday night, 18.9 million viewers tuned in to “American Idol.”  Somewhere between 5 and 10 million of those viewers–current and former FFA members– may have immediately recognized the emblem Randy Jackson was wearing on his shoulder:

We still don’t know whether Randy knew what that emblem stood for before getting tons of questions and kudos from FFA members on Facebook and Twitter. (Yo, Randy! We’d love to know, dawg! Call us!)

What Randy may or may not know is that for our millions of current and former members that emblem stand for a steadfast belief in “better days through better ways” thanks to agricultural education.

We believe that the world needs Ag Ed and FFA now more than ever. In the next three years, global population is expected to reach 7 billion. As a result, there’s a lot of debate going on about how best to keep up with growing demand for food and natural resources.  How do we greatly increase production, while protecting our land and natural resources? How we will ensure that food and commodity prices stay low? How will ensure that every one has enough?

We believe that, right now, former FFA members are working hard to come up with the right answers to these questions; FFA members who went on to become farmers, scientists, doctors, business managers, and community leaders.

We also believe that they can’t do it alone. They’re going to need help from the next generation. Agricultural education programs are preparing students across the nation to become our new producers and problems solvers. FFA members are learning how crops and animals grow, how to run businesses, how to help their communities and how to become effective leaders–the kinds of leaders we’ll need to usher in a brighter tomorrow.

So, happy National FFA Week everyone! This week is your chance to let the world know what Agricultural Education has done for you, and more importantly, what you’re doing for the world, thanks to what you’re learning through Agricultural Education.

Maybe you can start the conversation by saying “Hey… Did you see what Randy was wearing on American Idol the other night?” :)
